CryptiClock v1.0: HexArray
Arduino microcontroller, LEDs, custom electronics and laser-cut acrylic
2016
The CryptiClock converts time into randomly shifting arrays of LEDs, which appear at first to be moving about the honeycomb display grid in meaningless patterns. Once the concept is mentally decrypted it becomes very easy to read; for some this “ah-ha” moment comes quickly, and for others it never comes at all. This method of time display is not itself new and generally goes by the name “block clock” or “tick tac clock”, but the designers here have endeavored to create a version that is intentionally more difficult to interpret than other known examples of such devices.
